Recipe: Jason's favorite Potatoes

I make my boyfriend these home fry style potatoes all the time and they're simple and cheap!

What you'll need:
1. Russett or Red Potatoes
2. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3. Garlic Powder
4. Basil (or Rosemary or whatever is your favorite herb)
5. Salt and Pepper

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Line a glass baking dish with foil.
Step 2: While your oven is preheating, wash and chop your potatoes into bite size pieces. Think small triangles!
Step 3: Place all your potatoes in your baking dish, spread them out evenly. Drizzle with your favorite olive oil. Think enough to coat but not drown your potato bits.
Step 4: Sprinkle your garlic, salt and pepper and basil.
Step 5: Bake at 375 for 45 minutes. Clean up is a breeze, remove your potatoes to eat and throw away your foil mess.
Step 6: Witness your boyfriend tell you how much he loves your potatoes and cover them in hot sauce (as he does with everything)!
Let me know if you try these bad boys out! :)

Awkward Lunchroom Moment

Sequin firework collage via my sketchbook, 2012.

You know when someone says something rude to you and you have no idea how to respond...
Maybe because your mother told you not to say rude things/insult others...
Or maybe because you just don't believe in belittling others...
Well that happened to me today, in the break room at my place of employment.

I was eating my sandwich, picking at my fries, and drinking my diet soda that I bought with my own money. I usually pack my lunch, so a warm sandwich and fries is a rare treat to me and I don't eat like that very often.

Anyway...
All of a sudden (and completely out of NOWHERE), a coworker who I hardly know starting making comments about what I was putting in my body. She went on a rant about how many calories were in my food and how I shouldn't eat things like that.

WHAT?!?!

All I could think was "HOWWWW RUDEEEE" in my Stephanie Tanner from Full House voice in my brain and how uncomfortable I felt at the moment sitting there with my sandwich I very much wanted to finish in front of me.
I just blankly stared at her until she went on a rant about something else.

I can't imagine making a comment like that to a practical stranger, as I basically am to her. I'm responsible for the things I put in my body and sometimes my body needs the carbs (especially today after running around like a mad woman getting my to do list done at work).

Women should support each other, not belittle each other.
I also believe you have the right to choose to eat a sandwich and fries whenever you want unless your doctor tells you not too ;)

This cup of Newman's Own Decaf coffee, via the Keurig. Can you tell how tired I am? I am still wearing my name tag from work and no makeup is gracing my face.

Style I love: Nicki Minaj

Incase you didn't already know, I love Nicki Minaj.

If I could raid any celebrity's closet it would be hers. I love her bold makeup, wild shoes, crazy wigs, studs and neon style. I appreciate the fact that her style is her own.

I am Team Nicki all the way.

Sunday Brunch: Cinnamon Challah French Toast

So a couple of days ago when Jason and I went to the store to buy some groceries, I squealed with delight when I saw they had Challah Bread at the bakery. Jason was just as excited when I told him I would be making him French toast with it.

His response to my french toast: "This is the best breakfast ever."
...and it's SUPER easy to make!

What you need (ingredients):
-Challah Bread, I sometimes substitute wheat bread if Challah isn't available.
-Cinnamon Sugar
-Eggs
-Pam or Other Non-stick pan spray of your choosing
-Maple Syrup

1. Slice your Challah into bread size pieces. I cut six pieces (about half the challah). Set aside.
2. In a bowl, scramble 4 eggs.
3. Spray your pan with your Non stick spray and get it hot. On our electric stove, I had the heat setting at 7 out of 10.
4.Dip bread into egg mixture, then sprinkle cinnamon sugar on your piece as you place the piece in your pan. Let is sizzle/cook until the egg coating is cooked on both sides. Take it out and set aside on plate.
5. Spray non- stick spray and repeat step four until you've cooked all your pieces!
6. Pour some maple syrup onto your French Toast and watch your boyfriend (or husband, wife, baby momma, cousin, sibling, children, grandparents, etc.) go wild over how good challah French Bread toast is!

You could totally top this off with some fresh fruit too! YUM! Happy Sunday! :)

White Chicken Chili/Soup

I made Jason some Chili on Friday and he was in love with it.
It's super easy to make and we made it in our crock pot but you totally could make this on your stove top too!

Here is the recipe.

Ingredients:
-5 Cans of Chicken Stock. I used Low Sodium Broth.
-1 small can of Diced Green Chili Peppers
-1/2 can of diced tomatoes
-1 can of White Kidney Beans
-2 cans of white chunk chicken, I know it sounds odd to use canned chicken but trust me it's not as bad as it sounds! You can use fresh boneless thawed breasts if you have them available.
- A dash of garlic, basil, salt and pepper
-Tortilla Chips
-Mexican Blend Cheese

1. Place your chicken broth, white kidney beans, spices and chicken if your pot. Cook for an hour and a half on high in your Crock Pot.
2. Add the chili peppers and tomatoes, Cook for 30 more minutes.

Your chili/soup is ready! Garnish with crushed tortilla chips and a small handful of cheese.

The leftovers heat well and make a great warm lunch.

How to Prime Mini Canvases

My boyfriend and I bought these cool mini canvases at our local AC Moore. The problem? They needed some more priming before we could paint on them. I put together this quick little tutorial on how to prime them quick and easily in hopes it will help someone else!

What You'll Need:
1. Your small canvas, ours are 4"x4" but you can use this tutorial for canvases of varying sizes.
2. Gesso, Gesso is an acrylic based primer. You use this to protect the canvas/wood and prolong your artwork by using this. It comes in numerous colors, but white is the most common.
3. A paintbrush. Does not have to be a quality brush, cheap ones work just as well.
4. Sandpaper, a couple different grits. I used a medium grit (100) and a finer grit (150). The higher the grit number the finer it is.
5. Tape and Scissors. Masking Tape is best and is what I recommend most. I used Scotch Magic Tape because it's what I had at the time and cut the tape down so I only used the amount I needed.
6. Cup for Water and to hold your brush.
7. Paper Towel or Rag incase your fingers get dirty.
8. Something to protect your workspace. I used a plastic sheet that our postal carrier brought us some packages in. Newspaper works great too!

First, Tape off the back of the canvases. This will help will priming the sides but not leaving a giant mess. With your canvas taped off flip them back over to the front.

Start painting on your gesso! I like to work in layers, the first layer being watered down making sure I cover the entire area of the canvas.

Let your first layer dry. After your your canvas has dried, apply a thick layer evenly across the surface. Let dry! If you think your priming is still too thin, add one more thick layer! When your canvases are fully dry, remove the tape.

It's time to break out the sandpaper! You're sanding to make the surface smooth again. I use the 100 first. Sand just enough to knock the tooth of the gesso down. Use the finer grit to work out a clean, smooth surface. The amount of sanding you need to do is mostly done by feel.

You now have a great little canvas to create your own masterpiece on!

A sketchbook share...

Here is one of my recent sketchbook spreads.
My sketchbook is my portable studio, filled with thoughts, drawings and collages. I think everyone needs some sort of creative outlet whether it's making art, music, writing or cooking. I need to use my creative outlet of making art more lately.

This particular sketchbook is a part of the Art House Co-Op 2013 Sketchbook Project.

Here is one of my spreads from their Pictures and Descriptions Limited Edition 2012 book, I made this sketchbook on a theme of memorable conversations that I had around the time:

I guess this post is to remind myself to keep making things, even when I've had a long day. I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the week!

Etsy Picks: Snowflakes!

“I love snowflakes simply for the reason that each one is unique; nonidentical to zillions of crystalized counterparts. It's a difficult notion to wrap your brain around, and yet it reminds me that amidst the innumerable stories told throughout the ages, a distinctly new one rests on the tip of an author's pen.” ― Richelle E. Goodrich, Author

In the spirit of Winter, I thought it would be fun to find some handmade snowflake themed items on etsy. Here are a few of my finds:

Winter Wonderland Confetti via BirdcageCards

Snowflake DIY!

I definitely have snowflakes on my brain today. I just came across this super cute craft where you make snowflakes out of twigs and branches, so I just had to share it! :)

12 Memorable Things about 2012

Happy 2013 everyone, hope you all have a wonderful first day of the New Year!
I thought I would post some memorable things that happened to me in 2012 as I see many posts around the blogosphere that are similar.

1. I had my thesis show for my MFA at the University of Kansas, "A Space to Breathe" in February.

2. I left my apartment of three years in Kansas to move back to the east coast in June. It was a great feeling.

3. I spent time with the dogs. This is Max.

4. I spent the month of July in Johnston, Vermont at the Vermont Studio Center making art. It was amazing!

5. I spent time with my family, they're the coolest. This is us at an art festival.

6. I met Jason, the sweetest man I could ever ask for. He's my partner in crime, best friend and I'm deeply in love with him. This is us at a baseball game.

7. I started working as Visual Support for a big company. I mess with cosmetic ads, create fashion trend looks, use a big hammer and drag around a lot of ladders. This is my desk.

8. At work I make some interesting displays, like this one...where coach bags are hammered to a bust form with a giant ribbon. It screams "Buy Meeee!" Maybe, Maybe not, but it was fun to make.

9. Jason and I went to a few Orioles games and have season tickets for 2013. We went to the first Orioles/Yankees playoff game and happily sat through the rain delay to watch them play even though they lost it in the last inning.

10. I was a zombie for Halloween! This latex was really hard to get off my face, lol.

11. I started making jewelry again! Here is a stack of bracelets after being just made. I will be starting to list jewelry on etsy again as another way to help pay my student loans. I can't wait for you guys to see them all. :)

12. This guy, who I got to wake up next to every morning and will in 2013. Who tells me "You're pretty" across the bedroom when he doesn't have his glasses on and I'm leaving for work. He made my 2012 so much sweeter. Notice he's sleeping with a yoda pillow, yeah he's my favorite.

May 2013 be your best year yet! :)
